Questions about Therapy/Counseling

Q: What is the difference between therapy and counseling?

A: The two terms are often used interchangeably and this is the way I will view them.  Some therapists view counseling as dealing with less serious issues and psychotherapy as dealing with issues on a much deeper level.

Q: What is the difference between Coaching and Psychotherapy/Counseling?

A: In comparison, therapy/counseling, helps a client explore the past, present and future (often needing to focus more on the past), and therapy goals are set as a result of the intake session and a full assessment of the client’s needs. Christian Life Coaching will have coaching goals that are much more focused on the future. (See information on Coaching for a more in-depth explanation.)

Q: How often and how long do we come for our appointments?

A: Usually, appointments are scheduled once a week for a 55-90 min. sessions. The length of time can be determined by the client and therapist on an individual case-by-case basis, especially since insurance is not involved. As progress is made, therapy sessions are extended to bi-weekly, monthly, or quarterly. It can be helpful for clients to maintain bi-annual or annual sessions, similar to physical checkups one would have with their medical physician.

Q: If we are seeking marital counseling and my spouse won’t come with me, can I have a session by myself?

A: Yes!  Sometimes marital counseling clients have sessions by themselves for individual counseling and work towards counseling sessions together with their spouse at the appropriate time. Others prefer to meet together for all sessions. There is no right and wrong here. It’s simply a matter of preference or individual circumstances

Q: Can I pay for someone else’s appointment?

A: Yes. If the client agrees, and if they sign a release that allows us to bill a third party on their behalf.

Q: How long do I have to wait for an appointment?

A: Generally, an appointment can be made within a 1-2 week’s time or possibly sooner.

Q: Do you accept insurance?

A: I currently accept Magellan, Optum, & United Heath. (Aetna, Tricare, & Medicare , are currently in process of credentialing) Please view the “Sessions & Fees” page for more details.

Q: What forms of payment can I use?

A: You may pay using cash, check, debit card, or credit card (I use square). For Tele therapy, I use Square or PayPal.
